πŸ› οΈ Day 0 Β· do this before Day 1

Get your laptop ready to build.

Follow these steps once, before the workshop. On Day 1 you start building straight away instead of waiting for downloads. Your progress is saved on this device, so you can stop and come back.

Check your laptop

5 minutes

β€Ί
Checking your device…
WindowsWindows 10 or 11 (64-bit). Check RAM: Settings β†’ System β†’ About β†’ Installed RAM. Check space: open File Explorer β†’ This PC.
MacA recent macOS. Check RAM: Apple menu β†’ About This Mac. Check space: System Settings β†’ General β†’ Storage.
  • 16 GB RAM is comfortable. 8 GB works if you test on your own Android phone instead of the on-screen emulator (step 7).
  • 20 GB free space. Android Studio and its parts are large.
  • Plug in your charger. Installing takes a while.
2

Install Android Studio (start this first)

20–40 minutes Β· the biggest download

β€Ί

Start this download first. While it runs, you can do steps 3 to 5.

  1. Click Download Android Studio and accept the terms. On a Mac, choose "Mac with Apple chip" if your Mac has an M1, M2, M3 or M4 chip; otherwise choose the Intel version.
  2. Open the downloaded file and install with the default options.
  3. Open Android Studio. When the setup wizard asks, choose Standard, accept the licences, and click Finish.
  4. It now downloads more parts (the Android SDK). Let it finish, even if it takes a while.

βœ… Done when you see the "Welcome to Android Studio" window with a New Project button.

3

Install VS Code

5 minutes

β€Ί
  1. Download the version for your computer and install it with the default options.
  2. Open it once to check it starts.
4

Install Google Antigravity

5–10 minutes

β€Ί
  1. Download Antigravity for your computer and install it.
  2. Open it and sign in with your Google account.

Free plans of AI tools have usage limits. That's fine for the workshop: we'll show you how to work within them.

5

Create your free AI accounts

10 minutes

β€Ί

Sign up (or sign in) in your browser. Use the same email for all of them, and keep them open in tabs on Day 1.

  • Already have Gmail? That's your Google account. No need for a new one.
  • We use Claude and ChatGPT in your web browser (claude.ai and chatgpt.com). There's nothing to install for them, and the free plans are enough.
  • Each AI tool may ask you to confirm your email or phone number. Do that now, not on Day 1.
6

Run your first test app

15–30 minutes Β· proves everything works

β€Ί
  1. In Android Studio, click New Project β†’ choose Empty Activity β†’ Next.
  2. Name it HelloLina and click Finish.
  3. Wait for the progress bar at the bottom to finish. The first time can take 5–15 minutes while it downloads build tools. Keep the internet on.
16 GB RAM: use the emulatorOpen Device Manager (right side), create a virtual phone with the recommended options, then press the green Run β–Ά button.
8 GB RAM: use your phoneDo step 7 first, plug in your phone, pick it from the device list at the top, and press Run β–Ά.

βœ… Done when a phone screen shows "Hello Android!". That means your laptop can build real apps.

7

Connect your Android phone

5 minutes Β· needed with 8 GB RAM, optional with 16 GB

β€Ί
  1. On your phone, open Settings β†’ About phone and tap Build number 7 times. (On some phones it's inside Software information.) You'll see "You are now a developer".
  2. Go to Settings β†’ System β†’ Developer options (or search "Developer options") and turn on USB debugging.
  3. Connect the phone to your laptop with a data USB cable. Some cables only charge.
  4. On the phone, tap Allow on the "Allow USB debugging?" message.
  5. Your phone's name appears in Android Studio's device list.

I'm ready for Day 1 πŸŽ‰

Let us know you've finished, so we can focus the setup clinic on people who still need help.

Something not working?

The download is very slow or fails
Use a steady Wi-Fi connection rather than mobile data, and restart the download. Android Studio needs a few GB in total, so start it early (step 2).
The emulator won't start, or says virtualization is off
The emulator needs your computer's virtualization feature switched on. The easiest fix is to use your Android phone instead (step 7). If you want the emulator on Windows: turn on Virtualization (Intel VT-x / AMD-V) in your laptop's BIOS settings, and turn on Windows Hypervisor Platform in "Turn Windows features on or off". If that sounds scary, bring it to the setup clinic.
The emulator is extremely slow
That's normal on 8 GB RAM. Close other apps, or use your phone instead. It's faster and more reliable.
Android Studio has been "syncing" or "building" for a long time
The first project downloads build tools, which can take 15 minutes or more on slow internet. Keep it open and connected. If it shows a red error, take a screenshot and send it to us on WhatsApp.
My phone doesn't show up in Android Studio
  1. Try another cable. Many cables can only charge.
  2. Unplug, plug in again, and look for the "Allow USB debugging?" message on the phone.
  3. Pull down the phone's notification bar, tap the USB message, and choose File transfer.
  4. On Windows, some phones need the maker's USB driver (search "your phone brand USB driver").
I'm running out of disk space
Empty the Recycle Bin / Trash and move big videos or downloads to a pen drive or cloud storage. You need about 20 GB free.
Can I do this on a Chromebook, tablet or phone only?
No. Android Studio needs a Windows, Mac or Linux laptop or desktop. If you don't have one, message us before Day 1.
